Open Hearts. Open Minds. Open Doors.

All are welcome here–at our church and our table.

At Forsyth United Methodist Church, we operate by a simple tenet: We exist to make new disciples of Jesus Christ and to love and serve both God and neighbor.

What We Believeis well said in the Nicene Creed from 381 AD

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in the one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

Our Story

Forsyth United Methodist Church celebrated its 150th anniversary on August 13-14, 2016!

Founded in 1866, the church held services in the local school house until a building was erected in 1868. (You can see the cornerstone for this building in our current sanctuary!) A west wing was added in 1911 (pictured left) and then removed when a new brick sanctuary was built in 1957.

Our Pastor

I was born and raised in northwest Montana where I came to know Christ when I was 17.  God had already placed a call to ministry on my heart and after attending college at Montana State University I went to Western Evangelical Seminary in Oregon.

After serving churches in western Oregon and Washington beginning in 1978 we were called to serve churches in central North Dakota and eastern Montana.  In 1993 we received a call to serve a small church in western Illinois, after a time of prayer we accepted the call and God opened the doors to serve in a variety of churches.  In 2004 God opened the door for me to return to the church of my childhood by serving with the United Methodist Church in the Illinois Great Rivers Conference.

My wife, Lois and I met while I was in seminary and married in 1977.  We have two grown children.  Our son and his wife live in western Illinois and provided us with a grandson in 2014 and will be having their second second child in May of 2017. We have a daughter who lives with her husband in Iowa and they had a daughter in November of 2015.

We are passionate about evangelism: leading people to the saving knowledge of Christ and then helping them grow in their relationship to him. We are also passionate about people possessing a great reward in heaven and a deep and rich relationship with Jesus Christ in this life.  Part of this passion comes from the training I received from Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in my early days as a Christian and part comes from the desire to see every person experience the rich blessings that can only be found in Jesus Christ.

Lois and I are also strong believers in prayer and Bible study.  Prayer releases the power of God into our lives and draws us closer to God.  The Bible is God’s Word to us in written form providing everything we need to find salvation and to live a godly life in this present age.  The Holy Spirit of God gives us the new birth into the Kingdom of God when we believe in Christ, changing our nature from within.  The Holy Spirit makes the Bible come to life in us, guiding us and directing our steps that we might please God in everything we do.  The Holy Spirit was sent to us by the Father and Jesus Christ for that very purpose for apart from God we can do nothing of value for the Kingdom of God.

We feel very blessed to be called by God to serve as a pastor and his wife in the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  We have been blessed to be able to travel in much of the United States and Canada.  In 2014 God opened the doors for us to go to Israel which has enriched our faith as we saw where many of the events of the Bible took place.

Lois and I have had a life verse in Psalm 37:4 which says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”  We have always been a team in the ministry God has called us to and this has been our joy and delight in the Lord.
